Melanotan II (MT-II) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, acting as a non-selective agonist at melanocortin receptors (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, MC5R), studied in pigmentation biology, melanocortin receptor research, and central nervous system studies.
Published studies document MT-II's stimulation of eumelanin synthesis at MC1R through cAMP-mediated tyrosinase activation, making it a widely used tool compound in pigmentation research. Separate literature investigates its MC4R activity in hypothalamic nuclei, with rodent studies examining food intake and cardiovascular parameters. MC3R activity has been explored in inflammatory and immune cell signalling models. MT-II is light-sensitive; reconstituted solutions should be handled under low-light conditions.
